20:00 – 21:00 Presentation of the Gjuteriet project: Adaptive use – how to use the already built as a resource (in English)
Gjuteriet is located in the old industrial harbour of Malmö, a district which is now becoming a new sustainable neighbourhood called Varvstaden. By adding new timber structures and recycled brick elements to the existing building, the historical landmark is to be transformed into an innovative, open public meeting place.
Gjuteriet was originally built in 1910. Currently in a state of a ruin, exposed to elements, it sparks interest and imagination. The approach to the transformation of this former foundry can be defined as a reinterpretation of an architectural heritage with various time periods present, coexisting. The added timber structure, detached from the old walls and hung from the roof, keeps a distance to the existing building to preserve spatial qualities of the large hall.
Material sustainability is the main strategy, aiming to minimize the use of resources. Besides preserving building elements, the new construction is mainly made of timber to minimize the overall ecological footprint. Timber is also a light-weight material, reducing the load added on the existing structure. Complementary materials make use of recycled and upcycled parts from demolitions in the area. The project focuses on how to utilise the already built and on cultural heritage as a resource whilst creating a vibrant, open public space in Malmö of today.
