Film with musical accompaniment: Häxan + Verity Susman

Les Femmes S’en Mêlent and 100% Villette, in collaboration with the Institut Suédois and the 41st edition of FIFF, present the Swedish film Häxan directed by Danish filmmaker Benjamin Christensen. Released in 1922 and recently restored by the Swedish Film Institute, the film will be screened with muscial accompaniment by Verity Susman.

Häxan explores the history of witchcraft through the ages. A mixture of mediaeval images and reconstructed scenes, it is a superb, unsettling silent film that was originally censored in many countries. It has been given several musical scores: Verity Susman composed hers in 2013. A former member of the all-female British group Electrelane, she now composes music for performances and films. As well as saxophone and synthesisers, she uses the voice as the main instrument for Häxan.

Verity Susman thus steps beyond the point of view of the filmmaker and allows us to hear another story that is determinedly modern and militant: a new voice.
