On the Parisian rooftops, dansers pose for the camera with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
The documentary Ballets suédois – arts, dances and crazy nights revisits the life and creation of the Ballets suédois, an avant-garde dance scene from 1920 to 1925. They were founded in Paris by the patron collector Rolf de Maré and the dancer-choreographer Jean Börlin, accompanied by approximately twenty Swedish dancers. The two Swedes collaborated with artists such as Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Erik Satie, Irène Lagut and even Francis Picabia, thus creating a emblematic dance company sprung from the cultural swarm of the Roaring Twenties. From Paris to Stockholm via the biggest cities in the world, these dancers conquered the biggest international stages while breaking the standards of modern dance. For their centenary, the documentary looks back on the brief but fascinating history of a company like no other, ahead of its time.
