Guided tours: Hem x 6 or the art of Swedish interiors

Presented in the framework of Swedish Design Movement, a series of events dedicated to sustainable design, the Institut Suédois invites you to (re)discover its residency apartments entirely renovated by six creative Swedish interior design duos in 2019.
Patchwork of six photos showing cushions, a mirror, a bench with plants on it, a leather armchair, an armchair with flower patterns and wooden coat hooks.

Every month, as part of its residency programme, the Institut Suédois hosts researchers and artists from Sweden in the six apartments on the upper floors of the Hôtel de Marle.

Two years ago, the six artist-in-residence apartments were revamped by six design and production duos, offering six different takes on the idea of “hem”. In Swedish, as in English, a dwelling can be referred to in two ways: hus (house), which denotes a physical locale and is somewhat impersonal; and hem (home), which suggests ideas of belonging, safety and comfort.

The designs all have two things in common: creativity and sustainability. Among the design and production pairings are the Carl Malmsten company in partnership with designer Anna Kraitz and the wooden furniture brand Gärsnäs with the Franco-Swedish design studio Färg & Blanche. TEA in partnership with Ulf Agnér redesigned the smallest apartment. Their work pays tribute to Gripsholm Castle in Sweden, which dates from the Middle Ages and was the first ever venue to host Swedish artists-in-residence. The TEA/Ulf Agnér duo has mixed together styles and eras: their interior features an 18th-century-inspired tapestry, a lamp by Franco-Swedish designer Inga Sempé and an artwork by Léonor Fini, who once stayed in the Hôtel de Marle.

This Fall, the Institut Suédois is once again opening its artist-in-residence apartments to the public and, for two weekends only, offering guided tours.

Here are the participants who rose to the challenge of bringing Swedish interiors to France, creating a hem for our guests:

  • Carl Malmsten AB – Anna Kraitz
  • TEA – Ulf AgnĂ©r
  • Beckmans College of Design Stockholm – Paris College of Art
  • Svenskt Tenn – in line with the philosophies of Estrid Ericson and Josef Frank
  • Gärsnäs – Färg & Blanche
  • DUX – Septembre Architecture & Urbanisme

Since the very beginning, Kasthall has been a part of the project by offering each duo the opportunity to choose the rug that would best suit their design. In total, no less than forty-five brands support the project, which involves creating a Swedish atmosphere in 6 studios, down to the finest details. Some examples include Electrolux for the appliances and Design House Stockholm for the tableware.

In partnership with the festival Les Traversées du Marais festival and Paris Design Week.
