As usual, the Institut Suédois has partnered with other foreign cultural institutes in Paris (members of FICEP) to organise a festival brimming with musical discoveries.
Franco-Swedish guitarist Paul Jarret, who won the 2019 Adami Jazz Talents award for his collaboration with American drummer Jim Black, and his quartet creates chamber music that blurs the boundaries between jazz, free improvisation and minimalistic or repetitive forms. They draw inspiration from traditional Swedish music, poems about exile and Scandinavian melodies.
EMMA is a musical evocation of Swedish migration to the USA in the early 19th century. Its origins are to be found in the story of Emma Jonasson, Paul Jarret’s great-grandmother, who lived in New York for several years before returning to Sweden to start a family in the 1910s. Vilhelm Moberg’s Emigrants series, a classic of Swedish literature, has also inspired Jarret’s work.
The quartet, a member of the Pegazz & l’Hélicon collective, comprises Paul Jarret (guitar, artistic director), Hannah Tolf (vocals, percussion), Étienne Renard (double bass) and Éléonore Billy (nyckelharpa, a traditional Swedish stringed instrument).
