Le Mois du Doc: Kiruna

Since 2000, Le Mois du Doc has been the must-see November event presenting documentaries and discussing global issues. This year, the Institut suédois presents two films on Kiruna, a mining town in the north of Sweden which now has to move because it is threatened with collapse.

This year’s theme is ‘vacillements’ which means wavering or hesitation. We will be screening a short film and a feature-length film: Ovan Gruvan (Over the Mine) and Boom Town. Both deal with the displacement of the town of Kiruna, which lies above the Arctic Circle and is threatened with collapse because of the mining activity that takes place there. Hesitations abound as the town faces its destiny. The evening will continue with a discussion with the directors of the two films.

Ovan Gruvan (Over the Mine)

The Kiruna iron mine, one of the largest in the world, has eroded the subsoil under the town. Threatened by landslides, some large buildings in the centre must be moved, creating a slow, majestic dance captured on camera by Théo Audoire and Lova Karlsson, filmmakers and architects of a constantly moving urban landscape.

Boom Town

Boom Town is about blasts in the largest subterranean mine in the world.
It’s about the sound of houses collapsing.
It’s about rampant urban growth in the boom town of Kiruna.
And it’s set to the sound of drums played by the rock band Punk Williams!
