Open-air cinema #2: Summer With Monika by Ingmar Bergman (1953)

Every autumn, the Institut Suédois gives the summer one last chance and invites you to the Hôtel de Marle garden for two open-air screenings. If you like, bring a chair, a cushion or a blanket… If not, the lawn is yours!

Ingmar Bergman will be honoured in 2018. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, the Swedish filmmaker who directed classics such as Fanny and Alexander (1982) and The Seventh Seal (1957) will feature on the programmes of many cultural institutions. For a foretaste of our special Bergman season this autumn, why not come to an open-air screening of one of his greatest films: Summer with Monika.

In a working class area of Stockholm, young Monika divides her time between the grocery where she works and the hovel she lives in with her drunken father and noisy siblings. One day, she meets Harry and he falls for her. They decide to run away to an island outside Stockholm, and spend the summer there, thinking that their love will last forever…

Length: 1hr 38 mins, drama, in Swedish with French subtitles.
Admission free while space lasts.
Gates open at 20:30 (garden gates at 10, rue Elzévir).
In case of rain, the screening will be cancelled.
