For this second Carte Blanche, Niki Lindroth von Bahr presents two stop-motion films by Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef: Oh Willy… and This Magnificent Cake!
Emma De Swaef specialises in stop-motion and designing textile dolls. She directed one of the three chapters of The House, produced by Netflix, for which Niki Lindroth von Bahr directed another chapter. Marc James Roels comes from the world of live film fiction and won awards for his short films Mompelaar (2007) and A Gentle Creature (2010). The duo received no less than 80 awards for Oh Willy…, including the Cartoon d’Or for the best European animated film. It was also nominated for the Césars in 2013. This Magnificent Cake! is their latest creation.
Oh Willy…
Willy, fifty years old, goes back to the nudist colony where he spent his childhood to visit his sick mother. When she dies shortly after he arrives, Willy find himself alone facing some tough choices. Confused and sad, he decides to run away into the forest. After some initial problems, a big, gentle, hairy creature protects him.

An anthology of late 19th-century African colonisation, this film is divided into five stories featuring a troubled king, a pygmy working in a luxury hotel, a ruined businessman, a lost porter and a young deserter.
