Knock on Wood
Stefan Nilsson, one of Scandinavia’s most sought-after design and lifestyle experts, will be presenting (in English) his project “Knock on Wood”, a permanent installation at Clarion Sign Hotel in Stockholm made mainly of wood. He will then be hosting a talk on the subject of wood with four major design and architecture experts: designers Lisa Hilland and Sara Szyber and architects Frederic Benesch (In Praise of Shadows architects) and Stefan Sjöberg (Kjellander Sjöberg architects). What are the challenges and opportunities relating to wood? And why are Swedes so obsessed with wood?!
This talk is an introduction to the Woodlife talks that will take place from the 21 to the 23 September at the Institut suédois: three days dedicated to the role of wood in architecture and the way it can help us to build a sustainable society.
Stefan Nilsson, also known as Trendstefan, is one of Scandinavia’s most sought-after design and lifestyle experts. Listed as one of the most influential people in the design field by magazine RUM, he is constantly reporting on changing behaviour and needs. He also runs Designgalleriet, a mobile gallery space in Stockholm exhibiting contemporary design.
“Knock on Wood” is a permanent installation at Clarion Sign Hotel in Stockholm, a hotel room revamped by Trendstefan so that it fits the contemporary needs of the business traveller. The room was changed from a navy and white, business-oriented room to a leasure space with warmer colours. Everything was made by local designers and producers from locally sourced materials. This is a pure Swedish design experience made from Swedish wood.

Lisa Hilland creates high-quality long-lasting design, combining modern high-tech production techniques with quality craftsmanship. She is a graduate of Central St Martin’s College of Art and design in London, giving her an international approach to her Scandinavian heritage. Her clients include renowned Swedish brands such as Konsthantverk Tyringe, Gemla, Orrefors and Svenskt Tenn. Lisa Hilland is also the founder of sustainable design brand Mylhta, for which she has been granted several awards.
Sara Szyber designs furniture. She works on different scales and has a special interest in history- and culture-related furniture, as well as in shapes and colours. She is also a design teacher at Göteborg University and is keen on passing on the value of sustainability to her students. Her “Death Proof” Cabinet, presented in the current Living Room exhibition at the Institut suédois, was originally showcased at the feminist contemporary design exhibition Misschiefs initiated by the French-Swedish curator Paola Bjaringer. “Death Proof” came from a wish to actively participate in women’s representation in the arts and design in general but also, more specifically, highlight a new contemporary Swedish style.
Fredric Benesch is a founding partner at In Praise of Shadows architects. Besides pavilions like the one in the garden of the Institut suédois, they work with a wide range of projects, mainly in wood: interior designs for the Aesop stores in Stockholm, housing projects in the Stockholm suburbs, or private commissions as the Kayak-house, nominated for the Swedish Wood Award.
Stefan Sjöberg is a founding director of Kjellander Sjöberg architects, a diverse international practice with integrated workshops and studios in Stockholm, Malmö and London. He has led the practice towards establishing a sustainable and community-driven approach based on planetary boundaries and innovation. Stefan works on large scale urban projects, transformations, residential developments promoting timber construction. His work is based on an in-depth understanding and analysis of the urban fabric, culture, place, climate, modes of use and local conditions. His design vision is to contribute to neighbourhoods and meeting places in order to support healthy and thriving communities. Stefan has received a range of awards and prizes for Kjellander Sjöberg competition-winning designs and completed buildings. Alongside his architectural practice, Stefan is a frequent public speaker and initiates research through think tanks, work-shops and exhibitions.

“Meet the interior designer Pierre Marie”
The interior designer Pierre Marie, curator of the on-going Living Room exhibition, will be talking to Ewa Kumlin, head of the Institut suédois, about the design and production of his Ras El Hanout tapestry and the scenography of the exhibition. What is his relation to Sweden? What is his vision of Swedish design? How did he choose the Swedish furniture and objects for his exhibition?
With Patricia Racine, art director of the Robert Four Manufactory in Aubusson where the tapestry was made.
