Exhibition: Materials of Memories

Three photographer-artists explore the boundaries between abstraction and documentation, scenic staging and documentary work. Here, the photograph is not simply an image but a living material, memory in movement and a space of reflection.
Abstract motive in yellow and orange shades.

Each taking a unique approach, Linda Hofvander, Erik Gustafsson and Jenny Källman explore the very essence of photography: image, trace, memory… Their focus of interest is fixing time on a physical medium, thus technical processes and darkroom activities lie at the centre of their practice. Their praxis, which is both conceptual and sensitive, allows for the unexpected, the accidental, emotion.

Erik Gustafsson alternates between abstract images – created by the effects of light on photosensitive paper, which he sometimes reworks in the darkroom or studio – and photographs of everyday scenes. The result is an almost random visual flow, of which viewers are invited to develop their own interpretation, to discover a personal understanding.

Linda Hofvander photographs plaster casts of clothes that previously belonged to a deceased loved one. She mounts her black-and-white images on curved media that she displays on bases of different heights painted in the same colours as the clothes. Her installations are a representation of the traditional role of photography to provide a trace of what no longer exists, an imprint of the past.

Jenny Källman also shifts between abstraction and documentation. In some of her works, reflections and gleams of light erase parts of the image, concealing more than they reveal. Källman also mounts black-and-white portraits and bodily details on the backs of suspended mirrors, which slowly turn, scattering light like disco balls. Light and shadow, image and reflection structure and dissolve the space.
