Sound walk + concert: the 60th anniversary of Elektronmusikstudion

Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) from Stockholm is celebrating its 60th anniversary in the garden of the Institut suédois along with New Atlantis Orchestra and Souffle Collectif. Before the concert there will be a special "sound walk" through the exhibition "Suivre les ondes".
Shape of a musician playing an electronic instrument in the dark.

EMS was founded in 1964 with the utopian and visionary idea of helping to change the world by creating new forms of music. Over the following years, Stockholm became one of the most important centres for new music in Europe, forging strong links with composers and studios in France. For 60 years, EMS has been a forum for musical experimentation with branches all over the world.

This anniversary year is punctuated by exhibitions, concerts and performances not only in Stockholm but also in Paris, in resonance with the exhibition Suivre les ondes. This time, EMS is partnering with New Atlantis, an innovative music ensemble comprising the artists and composers Nicolas Becker, Tarek Atoui and Quentin Sirjacq, and also with Souffle Collectif. Musicians, artists, researchers and instrument makers will be gathering for a concert in the garden at dusk.

Before the concert there will be a series of ambulatory performances given by the musicians in the spaces of the Institut suédois where works by Lars Fredrikson, Anastasia Ax and Christine Ödlund are displayed – another invitation to « follow the waves ».

New Atlantis

A collective of variable dimensions at the intersection of sound and art, New Atlantis is a site-specific creative laboratory forming unusual alliances between musicians, artists, researchers and instrument makers.

The goal of the ensemble is to develop immersive systems and experimental musical structures based on improvisation using period instruments, new stringed instruments, electronic and electro-acoustic music, sculptures and sound-making objects.

The aim of this project is to explore new interactions between experimental practices and focuses both on improvised music and on contemporary, electronic and traditional musical forms.

‪Souffle Collectif

Souffle Collectif is a company founded by Julien Colardelle devoted to inventing and experimenting with collective forms, drawing from dialogue between the performing arts, period music, improvisation and original creations. In each production and performance, Souffle places sharing, reflection and celebration at the heart of its projects, which stand at the intersection between different cultures.

With support from ‪Längmanska kulturfonden. New Atlantis is supported by Impuls Neue Musik.
