April 20th – a very special day!

On 20 April 2021 it will be 50 years to the day since the Institut Suédois was inaugurated with great pomp and circumstance by Crown Prince Carl Gustaf, now King of Sweden. Visit our social media channels on this day - we’re preparing all kind of different posts, starting with a “royal greeting” …
1971, the king of Sweden smalltalks with a couple and the wife of the Swedish Embassador, Anna Hägglöf.

And that’s just the beginning! Throughout the year, which we’ve decided to dedicate to the theme of Friendship, we’ll be sharing anecdotes, interviews and archive images on our social networks. We’ll also be launching our new format “3 questions for…” – mini-interviews of old and new friends of the Institut: artists, representatives of institutions, arts professionals, artists-in-residence…and also Swedish language learners and colleagues.

Our journey through time will begin, fittingly enough, on 20 April. We will remember the evening in 1971 when Crown Prince Carl Gustaf, the Swedish Ambassador Gunnar Hägglöf and the first Director of the Institut Suédois, Pontus Grate, with his wife Elisabeth at his side, welcomed hundreds of guests to the opening of the institut with exhibitions on urban design, the environment and the latest textile trends: subjects that are as important today as they were back then.

Mirroring that historic event, Crown Princess Victoria, our current Ambassador Håkan Åkesson and Elisabeth Grate, who is now one of the most highly respected publishers in Sweden, will honour us with a digital greeting. To represent artists, the stage director and artist Karl Dunér, whose exhibition Islands will be shown when we reopen, and the great trombonist Nils Landgren, a faithful friend of the Institut Suédois, have also been invited to take part in launching our Friendship-themed programme.
